Skin Checks at Mildura Skin Cancer Clinic
Importance of Skin Checks
A skin check, or skin examination, is a visual inspection of your skin by a trained healthcare professional, to identify any suspicious moles, lesions, or changes that could indicate skin cancer.
Regular skin examinations by a trained healthcare provider can help detect new or changing lesions early, improving outcomes.
What to expect during your Skin Check
1. Preparation
You may be asked to remove clothing to expose all areas of your skin. Gowns are typically provided for privacy.
Bring up any concerns or specific spots you've noticed.
2. Visual Examination
The trained healthcare provider will examine your entire body, including areas often overlooked, such as your scalp, behind your ears, and between your toes.
They'll look for irregularities, changes in colour, size, shape, and texture of moles or spots.
3. Mole Mapping (if applicable)
Sometimes photographs of your moles will be taken for future comparisons, especially if you have many moles or a history of skin issues.
4. Discussion
The trained healthcare provider may ask about your medical history, sun exposure, use of tanning beds, and family history of skin cancer.
You can discuss any concerns you have about specific moles or skin changes.
5. Follow-Up
If any suspicious lesions are found, the trained healthcare provider may recommend a biopsy, where a small sample of tissue is taken for further examination.
Depending on the findings, they may suggest regular follow-up visits to monitor any changes.
After the Skin Check
If a biopsy is performed, you may receive instructions on caring for the biopsy site and when to expect results.
If no concerns are found, you may be advised on skin care practices, such as sun protection, and how often to have future skin checks, typically annually or more frequently if you have risk factors.
